CASE STUDY: Midnight and Beyond

"Youth crime in a North Edinburgh neighbourhood has reduced by more than 80% in the last year following an ‘inspirational’ community initiative."

Midnight and Beyond was established in 2014 as part of the Total Craigroyston initiative, aiming to engage with young people involved in anti-social behaviour and youth crime in North Edinburgh. Formerly FACENorth SCIO, Midnight and Beyond became an independent charity in July 2022, with the support of the KPE4 Charitable Trust.

Midnight and Beyond's strengths lie in its ability to build trust and rapport with young people, fostering positive relationships that enable personal growth and development. Additionally, their community engagement efforts and advocacy work amplify the impact of their initiatives, driving positive change in both individual lives and the broader community. Midnight and Beyond has achieved significant successes in reducing youth crime and anti-social behaviour, increasing educational attendance and engagement, providing pre-employment training, ensuring sustainable positive destinations for young people, improving overall health and well-being, enhancing community value, and reducing costs to the government through its innovative impactful programmes. These successes demonstrate effectiveness in empowering young people and creating positives change in their lives and the community.

Midnight & Beyond

Diversionary & Support

The innovative and recognised Midnight & Beyond programme not only focuses on building relationships and offering alternative diversionary activities until 3am in nature but also provides comprehensive support, including one-to-one, family and court support, addressing the diverse needs of young people during these crucial hours and beyond.

Statistics for 2022/23:

- 44 Young people engaged in this programme

- 12 Young people supported to attend benefits appointments

- 16 Young people supported through their court service

- 100+ One to one / family support contacts around a range of issues

- 100% Young people now attending / adhering to all legal requirements

- 80% Reduction in new criminal charges amongst young people

On Track

Employability

Based at their container at Gypsy Brae and outreach work, the On Track initiative is a comprehensive programme aimed at removing barriers for young people, supporting them on their journey to employment and guiding them towards positive destinations. Through this initiative, they acquire valuable skills and access various opportunities, ensuring a pathway to personal and professional growth. Young people can also gain their CSCS green card which enables them to work in the construction industry.

- 7 Young people supported into employment

- 11 Young people supported to access training

- 18 Sets of PPE provided for employment

Go Beyond

Health and well-being

The Go Beyond programme focuses on providing young people with opportunities to explore and challenge themselves beyond their comfort zones. Through activities like hiking, nature, walks, fitness and engaging in outdoor experiences, the programme aims to promotes personal growth, resilience, and a sense of accomplishment. It encourages participants to go beyond their perceived limits, fostering a positive impact on their mental well-being and overall development.
