Nailing the Basics

At KPE4, our work is guided by four strategic pillars: Nail the Basics, One Champion, Foster Belief and Collaborate. Last month, we focused on One Champion and the role a single trusted adult can play in a young person’s life. This month, we turn to Nail the Basics and the conditions that make that kind of support possible in the first place.

These pillars draw on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, a theory which argues that before individuals can learn, develop confidence and realise their ambitions - our basic human fundamentals must be met.

That is why Nail the Basics matters because, before we talk about attainment, aspiration or long-term outcomes, the essentials of food, personal safety and a stable home must be in place.

Basic Needs: Food & Shelter

Fresh Start addresses the issue of childhood hunger by operating a pantry on a model built around dignity, choice and affordability. Members pay £5 per visit to access a wide range of food and household essentials. That matters hugely - because it feels like a normal weekly shop rather than a crisis response, giving families more control over their choices while also creating breathing room in the household budget.

Fresh Start also supports families moving on from homelessness. Through its ‘Starter Pack’ scheme, it provides essential items from bedding, crockery and cookware to cleaning products, toiletries and small appliances - helping to turn empty accommodation into a liveable space. Alongside this, support such as white goods, painting and flooring can help ensure homes are not just furnished but ready to live in and a place families can call home. Together, this reduces immediate financial pressure and enables individuals and families to settle with dignity and begin rebuilding towards a more stable future.

Basic Developmental Needs

Nailing the Basics is not only about meeting physiological needs, it also includes funding charities that support individuals to meet the basic developmental needs of infants and young children. Stepping Stones works with young parents from pregnancy onwards. Through group work, home visiting and support, families build confidence, reduce isolation and access help at the point it is needed most.

“We work alongside families to build on their strengths and capacities, ensuring they have equal access to services which support them to achieve their potential.” – Stepping Stones

Early years development is also central to the work delivered by North Edinburgh Arts. Through their CREATE sessions, we see how play, connection and routine contribute to those same very foundations. Every Thursday and Saturday morning they run free creative sessions for parents and carers with young children (0-5 years) with simple ideas that can be recreated at home on a budget. These sessions offer a consistent and welcoming environment where children can learn through play and ideas can be carried into everyday life.

Nail the Basics is about recognising that the basics are fundamental to the future success of young people. When those essential foundations are in place, young people are far better equipped to grow, learn and thrive over time – giving them the best possible chance at reaching their potential.
